Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced the completion of a £780,000 upgrade scheme on Dungannon Road, Portadown. The project delivers a series of safety improvements, including the installation of a new PUFFIN pedestrian crossing, asphalt resurfacing, and enhanced road markings.

The Minister marked the switch‑on of the crossing alongside local residents, pupils, and staff from St John the Baptist College and St John the Baptist Primary School. The resurfacing covered approximately 1.3 kilometres across Charles Street and Dungannon Road, improving the road surface and visibility with clearer markings and additional warning signs.

Minister Kimmins emphasised that road safety remains a high priority for her Department. She noted that Dungannon Road is a busy strategic route into and out of Portadown, with new housing developments increasing traffic levels in recent years. The PUFFIN crossing, located at the rear entrance of St John the Baptist College, is expected to benefit pupils, parents, staff, and vulnerable pedestrians accessing shops, services, and the local church.

Further measures included the construction of a footway link between Craigwell Avenue and Charles Street, providing a safer crossing point. Two new pedestrian islands were also added on the main Dungannon Road at The Spires, designed to improve pedestrian safety and help reduce vehicle speeds.

Minister Kimmins highlighted that the investment will deliver long‑term benefits for residents, businesses, and road users in the Portadown area. She stated that the scheme demonstrates her Department’s commitment to improving the road network, ensuring safer connections for communities and supporting local economic activity.
